沈阳农业大学组建于1952年，由当时的复旦大学农学院（茶叶专业除外）和沈阳农学院部分专业合并而成。学校坐落在沈阳市东郊的天柱山南麓，东与世界文化遗产清福陵毗邻，西与沈阳城区相连，学校占地2万2千亩，校园有山有水、有旱田水田、坡地和林园，农业教育、科研条件优越，环境幽美，景色宜人。
　　沈阳农业大学办学历史悠久,其前身之一的沈阳农学院的发展可追溯到20世纪初我国农业教育的始兴时期。1910年，当时的奉天省设立省立高级中学，1929年该中学改为东北大学农学院；1938年改为奉天农业大学， 1946年恢复为东北大学农学院； 1949年8月，中共中央东北局和东北行政委员会决定将由于战事原因于1948年迁往北平的东北大学农学院、长春大学农学院、中正大学农学院迁回沈阳，在塔湾成立沈阳农学院。1950年，朝鲜战争爆发，学校迁至哈尔滨与哈尔滨农学院合并，并改称东北农学院。1952年全国高校院系调整，中央决定把复旦大学农学院（茶叶专业除外）迁往沈阳，与原沈阳农学院（东北农学院）的部分专业合并，组建新的沈阳农学院，第一任院长由我国著名教育家、畜牧专家张克威教授出任。上海复旦大学农学院始建于1938年。沈阳农学院创建之初就是一所高水平的农业大学；文革期间，学校受到严重摧残，一分为五，分散在了辽宁各地。文革后学校又迁回沈阳原校址办学。1979年10月经国务院批准为全国重点高等院校，1981年被批准为首批具有博士、硕士学位授予权单位；1985年10月，经原农牧渔业部批准更名为沈阳农业大学，时任中央军委主席的邓小平同志亲自为学校题写了校名。2000年4月国家教育管理体制改革，学校由农业部所属划转为辽宁省与中央共建，成为地方与中央共建的全国重点大学。
　　建校以来，在党的教育方针指引下，几代沈农人努力拼搏，开拓创新，学校的各项事业不断发展壮大，特别是改革开放以来学校步入发展的快车道，今天的沈阳农业大学教学和科研并举，以农业与生命科学为特色，农、理、工、经、管多学科协调发展。学校现有47个本科专业， 68个硕士学位授予权专业，31个博士学位授予权专业, 4个研究生专业学位学科，6个博士后科研流动站；学校有3个国家级重点学科，3个农业部重点学科，19个辽宁省重点学科（5个辽宁省重点一级学科），2个辽宁省重点培育学科。学校设有农学院、园艺学院、土地与环境学院、植物保护学院、水利学院、经济管理学院、林学院、畜牧兽医学院、食品学院、生物科学技术学院、信息与电气工程学院、工程学院、理学院、科学技术学院、高等职业技术学院和成人教育学院；有科学研究机构66个，其中，国家级区域创新中心1个，教育部与辽宁省共建重点实验室1个，农业部、辽宁省重点实验室（成果转化基地、工程技术中心）24个，沈阳市重点实验室（工程技术中心）7个；有基础和专业实验室39个，形成了多学科、多层次、多形式的教育体系，成为我国农业科技人才培养和科学研究的重要基地。
　　建校以来，有一大批海内外知名学者先后来校任教；自1990年以来，已有242人享受国务院政府特殊津贴。学校现有教职工1885人，其中专任教师1013人，教授182人，副教授463人；有博士研究生导师95人，硕士研究生导师329人。一支以博士和硕士研究生导师为骨干、以具有博士或硕士学位的青年教师为主体的高水平的师资队伍已经形成，学校具备了发展新兴学科、边缘学科和进行多学科联合科技攻关的基础和优势。

　　2000年以来，学校共承担国家、省、市的各类科研项目1200多项，有82项成果获国家、省（部）、市奖励,70%的科研成果在农业生产上得到大面积推广应用，创造了巨大的经济效益。学校在辽宁省8个市16个县（区）36个乡（镇）建立了科教基点，先后选派33名科技人员到当地担任科技副县（市）、乡（镇）长，有力地推动了“科教兴农”工作的深入展开。
