吉林农业大学创建于1948年，是吉林省属重点大学，是我国首批具有学士、硕士学位授予权的高等院校之一，1993年成为吉林省省属院校中最早获得博士学位授权单位的高校。学校办学条件优越，师资力量雄厚，校园风光别致，是治学育人的佳园。
    学校办学历史悠久，文化底蕴深厚，是吉林省农业、农村发展不可替代的、重要的人才培养摇篮和科技 
创新基地。经过61年的奋斗与努力，现已发展成以涉农优势学科为骨干，多学科协调发展的综合性农业大学。占地面积1053公顷，总建筑面积72.4万平方米，固定资产总值8亿元，图书馆藏书150余万册。中心教学楼、科研实验大楼、图书馆、体育训练馆等一批教学科研设施在吉林省高校中独领风骚。
    学校现有教职工1664人，其中，专任教师1081人，高级专业技术职称510人。形成了结构合理、素质优良、充满活力的高水平师资队伍。 
     学校设有14个学院，1个研究生学院，2个直属教学部门。拥有2个博士后科研流动站，17个博士学位授权学科，51个硕士学位授权学科，54个本科专业，1个国家重点（培育）学科和13个省部级重点学科，全日制在校生近20000人。
    学校现有19个省部级科研平台，3个国际合作与校企合作平台，各种类型校内外实践教学基地306个。十
五以来，共承担国家“863”、重大科技攻关、国家自然科学基金等各类科研项目848项，取得科研成果391项，获省级以上科研奖励115项，连续六年获省科技进步奖数量居全省高校第二位。李玉教授的“黏菌代表类群系统研究”成果荣获2007年国家自然科学奖二等奖，实现了我省省属高校获国家级奖励零的突破。承担建设了29个科技示范区，44个专家大院，27个新农村建设帮扶点，共选派省市级科技专家特派员30人，派出科教人员下乡累计达万余人次，推广实用技术400余项，累计增收80亿元。中部农业机械化示范区、西部绿色食品系列开发示范区受到了国务院总理温家宝、副总理回良玉的高度赞誉。
    依托雄厚的学科实力和教学科研资源优势，吉林农业大学坚持“以经济建设为中心”的办学理念，倡导“明德崇智、厚朴笃行”的精神，以内涵发展为主题，大力推进以提高教学质量和学生综合素质为核心的教育教学改革，探索并运行了“基础+平台”的人才培养模式，努力培养宽口径、厚基础、强能力、高素质的复合型与创造性人才。坚持科技为地方经济服务的方针，走出了一条“把论文写在大地上”的科教服务之路。
    学校实施开放办学战略，不断拓展办学空间，先后与美国、日本、意大利、乌克兰、加拿大、英国、韩国、俄罗斯等国家的20多所院校和科研院所建立了校际交流合作关系，派出中青年骨干教师、科研与管理骨干赴美国、日本、韩国、俄罗斯、加拿大等国家和地区访学、科研合作、参加学术交流会议近千人次。国际交流日益活跃，学校影响声名远播。
    六十年耕耘，六十载积淀。学校先后获得全国普通高等学校优秀教务处、全国星火计划先进集体、国家科技扶贫先进集体、教育部“十五”高校科技管理先进团队、全国高等院校后勤工作先进集体、全国五四红旗团委，全国体育工作先进学校等荣誉称号，18年被评为全国大学生社会实践活动先进单位。2001年和2007年，两次接受教育部本科教学工作评估，两次均获得“优秀”成绩。
