丽水学院是一所本科层次的普通高校。其前身是创建于1907年的处州师范学堂，后由处州师范学校到丽水师范学校，1977年设立浙江师范学院丽水分校，1978年经国务院批准定名为丽水师范专科学校。学校先后经历了几次合并。2000年8月，浙江省少数民族师范学校并入丽水师专。2003年3月，省政府批复同意丽水师范专科学校与丽水职业技术学院（丽水职业技术学院由丽水工业学校与丽水农业学校合并而成）合并，并以此为基础筹建本科层次的丽水学院。学校于2004年5月经教育部批准，升格更名为丽水学院。2007年3月，以丽水卫校为基础组建了丽水学院医学院。学校主要承担为丽水市和浙江省经济社会发展培养输送各类高级专门人才的任务，是浙江省文明单位和全国精神文明建设先进单位。
    校园占地919亩，校舍建筑面积31万平方米，单价800元以上的教学仪器设备总值6800万元，馆藏图书114万册。学校设有人文学院、数理学院、外国语学院、化学与生命科学学院、计算机与信息工程学院、教育学院、艺术学院、经济贸易与管理学院、机械电子与建筑工程学院、医学院、体育学院等11个二级学院和1个成人教育学院，开设有23个本科专业和26个高职高专专业。有普通全日制本专科在校生12800人，在职教职工946人，其中专任教师733人，具有博士、硕士学位或研究生学历教师 240人，副高以上职称教师290人，正高45人。有2个省级重点学科，5个省级重点建设专业。有省高校中青年学科带头人10人，入选省“151人才工程”9人，享受国务院特殊津贴2人。学校与美国肯恩大学，加拿大纽布朗斯维克大学，西班牙伊塞普大学等国外7所大学建立了合作关系。
    丽水学院形成并坚持地方性、师范性和民族性三大办学特色定位，围绕地方支柱性产业和基础教育对人才的需求，培养理论基础扎实、具有较强实践能力和创新精神的应用型高级专门人才。全校师生艰苦奋斗，奋发图强，开拓创新，努力将学校建设成为一所符合国家标准、适应社会需要、有较高办学水平和鲜明地方特色的合格本科学院。
