南京农业大学是一所直属教育部领导的，以农业和生命科学为优势和特色，农学、理学、经济学、管理学、工学、文学、法学多学科协调发展的全国重点大学，是国家“211工程”重点建设的大学之一。现任党委书记管恒禄教授，校长郑小波教授。
    南京农业大学起源于1902年三江师范学堂农业博物科，前身是私立金陵大学农学院和国立中央大学农学院。1952年院系调整时，上述两院以及浙江大学农学院部分系科合并，成立南京农学院。1963年被确定为全国两所重点农业高校之一。1972年搬迁至扬州，与当时的苏北农学院合并成立江苏农学院，1979年搬回南京，恢复为南京农学院。1984年经教育部批准更名为南京农业大学。1999年4月首批通过全国高校本科教学工作优秀评价。2000年6月建立研究生院。2007年4月再次以优秀成绩通过教育部本科教学工作水平评估；学校还设有“国家大学生文化素质教育基地”、“国家理科基础科学研究与教学人才培养基地”和“国家生命科学与技术人才培养基地”。
——人才培养  目前，全校各类在校生共有30000余人，其中全日制本科生16000余人，研究生7000人。在长期的办学历程中，学校先后培养和造就了48位两院院士。近年来，有6篇博士学位论文被评为全国百篇优秀博士论文。
