河南农业大学前身是成立于1913年的河南公立农业专门学校，之后相继经历了国立开封中山大学农科、省立中山大学农科、省立河南大学农学院和国立河南大学农学院等阶段。1952年全国院系调整时由河南大学农学院独立建院，成为河南农学院。1957年从古城开封迁至省会郑州。1984年12月更名为河南农业大学。
    学校现有农、医、理、工、文、经、管、法、教9大学科门类，下设农学院、林学院、牧医工程学院、机电工程学院、经济与管理学院、烟草学院、植物保护学院、园艺学院、农村发展与管理学院、信息与管理科学学院、生命科学学院、食品科学技术学院、资源与环境学院、文法学院、理学院、外国语学院、国际教育学院、体育学院、继续教育学院等19个学院。拥有1个博士学位授权一级学科，1个一级学科国家重点学科，2个二级学科国家重点学科，15个省部级重点学科；3个博士后科研流动站，19个博士点（含自主备案），65个硕士点，46个本科专业。学校占地面积4800多亩，馆藏文献总量234万册。
    学校现有教职工1700多人。在1000多名教师中，有双聘院士7人，教授、副教授400多人，具有博士、硕士学位的750多人；国家有突出贡献的中青年专家3人，享受政府特殊津贴40人， “新世纪百千万人才工程”国家级人选3人，国家和省骨干教师51人，省管优秀专家32人。各类在校生21000多人，其中博士、硕士研究生1300多人，全日制本科生15000多人，各层次成人学历教育生4000多人。
    学校建有国家小麦工程技术研究中心、国家玉米改良（郑州）分中心、国家烟草栽培生理生化研究基地、国家烟草（行业）栽培生理生化重点实验室、农业部农村可再生能源重点开放实验室、农业部黄淮海区域玉米技术创新中心等18个国家和省部级研究中心、基地和重点实验室。每年承担科研项目300多项，其中一半以上为国家和部委项目。近年来先后主持完成了小麦、玉米、烟草、能源、泡桐、畜牧、农业科技开发等重大科研项目，获省部级以上奖励200多项。 
    学校与美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、新西兰、日本、泰国、荷兰等40多个国家的70多个高校、科研机构、企业开展有技术合作和学术交流。
