重庆交通大学创建于1951年，是一所具有博士、硕士、学士学位授予权，以工为主，工、管、理、经、文等学科协调发展的多科性大学。
   学校办学历史悠久。1951年11月，邓小平领导的西南军政委员会为建设大西南，创建了重庆交通大学的前身——西南交通专科学校；时任西南军政委员会交通部部长、川藏公路筑路指挥部政委的穰明德任首任校长。1960年8月，成都工学院土木系、武汉水运工程学院水工系和四川冶金学院冶金系并入学校，组建重庆交通学院；同年，学校面向全国招收本科生。1985年，学校成为国家第三批硕士学位授予单位，开始招收硕士研究生。2000年，重庆其他交通类院校并入学校。2006年，学校新增为博士学位授予单位，并更名为重庆交通大学。2007年，学校接受教育部本科教学工作水平评估，结论为“优秀”。

   学校学科专业覆盖面广，拥有3个博士点、4个一级学科硕士点、27个二级学科硕士点、6个工程硕士学位培养领域、3个高师硕士专业学位、46个普通本科专业、28个高职（专科）专业，并具有授予同等学力人员硕士学位、推荐优秀本科生免试攻读硕士学位资格。教学科研平台实力强，教学科研仪器设备总值逾1.4亿元，建成了2个国家级素质教育基地、7个省部级重点学科、17个省部级重点实验室（工程技术中心、教学示范中心），基础及专业实验室（中心）达30余个。师资力量雄厚，1800余人教职员工中，有专任教师1100余人，其中“百千万人才工程” 国家级人选6人，享受国务院政府津贴等省部级及以上专家教授120余人，教授、副教授等高级职称人员500余人；中国工程院郑皆连院士、韩其为院士、梁应辰院士等140多名国内外知名学者担任学校特聘教授或兼职教授，定期到校授课（讲学）。截至2008年9月，学校全日制在校学生为23000多人。

   学校是国家特别是西部交通建设科技创新的重要基地，为国家特别是西南地区的交通建设做出了重要贡献。在西部高原、山区、库区的大跨径桥梁设计理论与建设关键技术，长大隧道设计与施工监控，内河港口建设与航道治理，高等级公路路基路面材料与修筑关键技术等领域具有鲜明的研究特色和显著优势。近五年来，承担了国家科技攻关计划等国家级科研项目100余项，省部级科研项目500余项；2000年以来，获得国家科技进步一等奖1项、二等奖2项、三等奖2项，国家教学成果二等奖1项，国家发明四等奖1项；获省部级科技奖励200余项。学校主办3种学术期刊，主办的《应用数学和力学》由中国科学院钱伟长院士任主编，是SCI和EI的收录刊源，以中、英文版向世界50余个国家和地区公开发行；《重庆交通大学学报（自然科学版）》是中国科技核心期刊和美国《剑桥科学文摘社》（CSA）、《乌利希期刊指南》（UPD）、波兰《哥白尼索引》（IC）等国际检索机构的收录源刊。

    学校面向世界各国招收留学生，与30多个国家和地区的高校及科研机构开展学术交流和科研合作关系。学生多次获得“全国青少年科技创新奖”、大学生“挑战杯”全国金奖等国家级奖励。本科毕业生初次就业率已连续9年超过90%。办学 57年来，学校为国家培养包括中国工程院院士郑皆连，原四川大学校长陈君楷，全国勘察设计大师孟凡超等在内的五万多名毕业生。

    学校发展取得的显著成效得到了党和政府及社会的充分肯定，温家宝、李岚清、贺国强、钱伟长、陈至立等领导同志先后到校视察。近年来，学校先后获得“全国先进基层党组织”、“全国毕业生就业工作先进集体”、“全国精神文明建设先进单位”等6项国家级荣誉称号。
