西南科技大学是一所全日制多科性普通本科高校。学校具有50余年办学历史。学校实行国家部委与省市共建，由四川省管理为主的管理体制。学校是教育部确定的国家重点建设的西部地区14所高校之一，四川省博士授权建设学校，国家工业与信息化部（国防科工局）与四川省人民政府共建高校，全国67所现代远程教育试点高校之一，具有推荐优秀应届本科毕业生免试攻读硕士学位研究生资格和开展同等学力人员申请硕士学位资格，具有开展留学生教育及接受外国留学生资格。西南科技大学国家大学科技园是科技部和教育部正式批准建设的国家大学科技园。2007年11月，教育部专家组对学校本科教学工作进行水平评估，结论为优秀。学校的发展目标为建设特色鲜明的教学研究型大学。

学校位于中国科技城--四川省绵阳市，占地4088亩。校址原为清华大学绵阳分校。学校校舍建筑面积近100万平方米。校园绿树成荫，碧水环绕，景色宜人，是读书治学的好地方。

学校以“艰苦奋斗，拼搏创新”为校园精神，坚持“育人为本、德育为先、科学理性、开放包容、彰显卓越”的办学理念和“质量立校、人才强校、特色建校、和谐兴校”的办学思路，不断深化办学体制改革，努力推进产学研结合办学。学校成立了有省、市政府和与学校同处一地的中国工程物理研究院、中国空气动力研究与发展中心、四川长虹电子集团公司、中国燃气涡轮研究院、四川九洲集团公司、西南自动化研究所、西南应用磁学研究所等参加的校董事会。学校从董事单位聘任了一批高级专业技术人员担任学校教授、副教授，建立了一支高水平、比较稳定的兼职教师队伍。学校与董事单位共建共享实验室16个。学校充分利用董事单位丰富且优质的人才、实验设备和科研课题资源进行合作办学，促进了学校快速发展和办学水平的迅速提升，形成了“共建与区域产学研联合办学”的鲜明特色。学校重视听取专家的意见和开展学术活动，以提高学校的办学水平。每年，都有一批两院院士来校指导工作和进行学术活动。

学校积极开展对外交流与合作，与近20个国家的高校和科研机构建立合作与交流关系，开展了合作科研、教师互访、学生交流等形式的合作。

目前学校承担了国家“十五”攻关、国家“863”、国家“十一五”科技支撑计划、国家自然科学基金、国家社会科学基金、国防科技基金、国家中小企业创新基金及部、省级和国际合作科研项目300余项。已获国家级、省部级等奖励260余项。

学校重视学生的综合素质培养。学校近年参加全国大学生电子设计竞赛、全国大学生数学建模大赛等都取得了较好成绩，特别是学校机器人小组在2004年7月获第三届全国大学生机器人大赛冠军和最佳技术奖，同年9月代表中国参加亚太地区大学生机器人大赛夺得亚军和最佳技术奖。学校是四川省艺术教育先进单位和四川省大学生社会实践先进单位。

中央、省、市各级政府和领导对学校非常关心和支持。时任中央政治局常委、国务院副总理李岚清同志，国务委员陈至立等先后来我校视察和指导工作。李岚清同志还为学校题写了校名。2009年3月16日，中央政治局委员、国务委员刘延东率科技部部长万钢等国务院有关部委领导来我校视察和指导工作，并对学校发展寄予殷切希望。
