成都理工大学始建于1956年,其前身是成都地质学院。1993年更名为成都理工学院,2001年经教育部批准组建成都理工大学。
    成都理工大学的主体原成都地质学院和成都理工学院,曾是原地质矿产部和国土资源部的重点高校。2000年学校管理体制转变为中央与地方共建、以四川省人民政府管理为主。现为四川省重点大学。校园面积2888亩,校舍建筑面积70余万平方米,教学科研仪器设备总值2.43亿元。
    成都理工大学是一所以能源、资源环境、基础工程、电子信息等学科为优势特色,以理工为主,多学科协调发展的教学研究型多科性大学。学校现有12个学院,1个体育教学部,同时设有研究生部、沉积地质研究院、继续教育学院等教学科研单位。学科专业以理工为主,涵盖经济学、管理学、文学、法学、哲学、农学、教育学等9个学科门类,有65个本科专业、50个硕士学位授权点、13个工程硕士招生领域、20个博士学位授权点、2个一级学科博士授权点、2个博士后科研流动站,有3个国家重点学科、1个国家重点(培育)学科、13个省部级重点学科,1个省级重点培育学科,1个国家实验教学示范中心、8个省级本科人才培养基地和3个省级实验教学示范中心。目前,在校学生总数2.5万余人,其中全日制普通本科生2万余人,硕士研究生3004人,博士研究生585人。在编教职工2100余人,其中博士生导师75人,教授190人,副教授419人,其中有3人成为国务院学科评议组成员,1人获“全国杰出专业技术人才”称号,1人获“四川省科技杰出贡献奖”,2人获“国家级有突出贡献的中青年专家”称号,2人获“国家杰出青年科学基金”资助,6人入选 “百千万人才工程”国家级人选,8人入选教育部“跨世纪人才培养计划”和“新世纪优秀人才支持计划”,1人获高校青年教师奖,4人获李四光地质科学奖,2人获黄汲清青年地质科学技术奖,1人获何梁何利科学与技术进步奖,3人获中国青年科技奖,90人享受国务院政府特殊津贴,30人获“四川省学术和技术带头人”称号,23人获“四川省有突出贡献的中青年专家”称号,8人获四川省青年科技奖。
    学校是我国重要的地球科学高层次人才培养与科学研究基地之一,有2个国家重点实验室(其中1个与西南石油大学共建)和6个省部级重点实验室。建校53年来,完成国家和省部级科技项目近1000项,获得包括国家科技进步一等奖、国家自然科学二等奖和国家技术发明三等奖等在内的国家和省部级科技奖750项(次),发表论著1万余篇(部)。学校鼓励广大学生积极参加科技文化活动,近年来组队参加 “挑战杯”、数学建模、电子设计、 英语演讲等重要赛事,获得国际奖9项、省部级和国家级奖励400余项;获得全国大学生田径、羽毛球、攀岩、健美操锦标赛前八名20余项次,省市高校田径、篮排球、健美操等团体和个人前八名近40余项次;获得全国、省市级大学生艺术专业比赛含金奖在内的各类奖励50余项次。
    学校重视国际交流与合作,先后与20个国家和地区的50余所大学和科研机构建立了交流合作关系。接待了来自40多个国家和地区的2000余名外国专家及留学生来校讲学、留学,出访近500余人次,开展了300余项科研合作。学校还多次主办国际学术会议;主办学术期刊6种,其中核心期刊4种。有成都理工大学工程技术学院、成都理工大学广播影视学院等独立学院和多个联合办学点,与资源、能源、环境、建筑、军工和高技术等领域的国家大型企业或科研院所建立了长期的产学研合作关系。
    学校博物馆是一座在西部乃至全国享有较高知名度的以地学类为主的自然博物馆,馆藏标本6万余件,其中不乏国家以及世界级的精品和珍品,如“合川马门溪龙”化石、“重庆大竹鱼”化石、“隆昌铁陨石”等。博物馆已被教育部确定为全国高校首批建设的数字博物馆,并获得从中央到地方所有级别的青少年科普教育和爱国主义基地称号。学校图书馆馆藏印刷型书刊154万册,中文电子全文图书约70万种,中外文电子全文期刊2万多种,并且集藏、借、阅、咨一体化和印刷性文献与数字化信息相统一。学校档案馆馆藏丰富、管理规范、分类科学,是四川高校少数获“科技事业单位档案馆国家一级”称号的档案馆之一。
