10月17日上午，“中国地理学会百年庆典暨2009学术年会”在北京举行。全国人大常委会副委员长、中国科学院院长路甬祥，全国政协副主席陈宗兴分别发来贺信对大会的召开表示祝贺。

　　中国地理学会理事长、中国科学院院士陆大道，中国科协书记处书记冯长根，中国科技部副部长刘燕华，国际地理联合会主席Ronald F. Abler，国际地理联合会副主席、中国科学院院士秦大河与兄弟学会代表，以及来自国家各部门、国际组织、国内外友好学术团体以及全国各有关地理单位的领导、嘉宾、代表和地理工作者共2000多人出席大会。

　　中国地理学会理事长陆大道院士说，100年来，中国地理学和中国地理学会经历了不平凡的发展历程，取得了辉煌成就。特别是改革开放后的30年，随着中国经济社会的迅速发展，中国地理学界精彩纷呈，取得了长足的发展。中国地理学会作为国家创新体系的重要组成部分，有力地推动了地理研究与教学。

　　新中国成立以来，一大批中国地理学会地理学家的研究成果广泛应用到国家的经济建设和社会发展的不同行业中，形成了任务带学科的发展模式，为社会主义的经济建设和社会发展做出了积极贡献。科技部副部长刘燕华说，“地理学要在未来的发展中，通过创新方法研究，推动学科理论建设，进一步提高国家经济和社会发展服务的能力。”

　　国际地理联合会主席Ronald F. Abler在讲话中称赞中国地理学会发展迅速，“在自然地理研究领域的青藏高原研究、冰冻圈和沙漠研究，全球变化研究；人文经济地理研究领域的城市与区域规划研究；综合研究领域的土地利用变化特别是城市土地利用变化研究等深受国际地理学界的关注和重视。”

　　据介绍，为期两天的学术交流大会，与会专家、学者将分“自然地理学”、人文经济地理”、“地图学遥感与地理信息系统”三个版块在北京大学、北京师范大学和首都师范大学同时举行学术研讨。

　　庆典大会上，为表彰和奖励杰出的地理工作者，中国地理学会还颁发了首届“全国优秀地理科技工作者”、第二届“中国地理科学杰出成就奖”、第五届“全国优秀中学地理教育工作者”和第十届“全国青年地理科技奖”等奖项。
