彭金山，男，1949年11月22日出生于河南省南阳市内乡县，高中毕业后先后在农村和西北林业建设兵团生活10年之久。1978年考入西北师范大学中文系。现为西北师大文学院院长、教授。
他所经历的是一幅波澜壮阔的人生画卷，然而儒雅的诗人笑谈风云，波澜不惊。
“夜，合上了最后一只眼。我的心又搁在荒岛之巅了。”
放牛、割草、打柴、读书，彭金山的童年生活与农村小伙伴别无二致，只是他的学习成绩一直在班上名列前茅。1968年，彭金山高中毕业，求学生涯却不得不止步。早在1966年，文革风暴就将高考中止。
“当时毛主席‘知识青年到农村去接受贫下中农的再教育，很有必要’的指示还没有下达，但是已经开始上山下乡。”彭金山的目光看向远处，仿若回到了那个年代。
彭金山插队的地方就在内乡，在熟悉的环境里做熟悉的农活，吃住又都在家里。和其他知青相比，彭金山显然要幸福很多，但他始终没有忘记自己的信念，他渴盼自己的良好表现能赢得“推荐”上大学的机会。1972年，彭金山得到了一次被推荐上大学的机会，却因出身“富农”家庭未能圆梦。彭金山当时的感受，用他诗集里的一句话来形容再恰当不过：“夜，合上了最后一只眼。我的心又搁在荒岛之巅了。”
在那个显失公平的年代，劳动之余，彭金山对人生以及所处的环境第一次进行了深入的思考：人生难道就要消磨在这样日复一日的劳动里？他第一次想到了离开家乡，目的地是大哥所在的甘肃省平凉市灵台县。
“依稀，头顶仍有一颗星。”
灵台，西北林业建设兵团，一样的下乡，不一样的生活。
“出大力流大汗，双手要推平万宝川！”是当时的劳动口号，10天轮休一次，可是在那个亢奋的年代，没有人休息，人人争做先进……在万宝川农场，到处都是挥汗如雨的火热劳动场景。
每一个劳动过后的夜晚，或者劳动的间隙，彭金山都在找机会读书，通过一些“特殊”的关系，他可以偷偷借阅到灵台县图书馆的书籍，这些书给了彭金山精神的享受。
就是在这样的条件下，1973年，彭金山创作出组诗《陇原战歌》，得到西北林业建设兵团上下的一致认可。正是这组诗让彭金山的知青生涯变得与众不同。8月，彭金山进入文学创作学习班学习，10月回到指挥部。惜才的副团长说：“你回去干啥？打牛屁股去吗？”之后，彭金山留在指挥部做政工工作，写材料、搞宣传。1974年，回农场生产组继续做测量工作。1975年，建设兵团建制撤销，彭金山所在的团并入万宝川农场，那位惜才的副团长时任副场长，调彭金山在机关写材料。并于同年前往泾川参加全省儿歌学习班。学习班结束后，彭金山被抽调与兰大老师带领的工农兵学员一起在平凉崆峒大队深入生活，共同创作当时的大学教材《写作常识》。两个月后，正准备回农场的彭金山再次接到任务，在平凉与其他几位编辑及抽调的知青一起修订我省建国后第一部长篇小说《大路向阳》。工作结束后，彭金山随出版社编辑来兰，进行编辑工作。1976年10月返回农场，继续在生产组做测绘工作。
“依稀，头顶仍有一颗星。”不断的学习、创作让彭金山在漫漫知青生活中看到了一点亮光、一线希望。
“启明星升起来了！”
1977年9月，大广播里播出了一个令人振奋的消息：“高考恢复了！”已经停止了10年的全国高等院校招生考试，将以统一考试、择优录取的方式选拔人才上大学。
复习了两个月，彭金山如愿参加了高考。彭金山以高分通过了这次考试，可是却因为政审材料出现了一些问题而“没能走成”。
1978年春，不甘心的彭金山再次投入书海备战高考。
1978年，雨天，60里外的灵台县县城，近千知青组成的庞大高考考生队伍成为灵台县历史上的一道风景。各大旅店突然爆满，十字街旅店里，彭金山和二三十名年龄从十五六岁到三十多岁不等的赶考考生，一起挤在同一间房间的大通铺上，为实现鱼跃龙门的梦想而做最后的努力。
当年的高考，400名文科考生，彭金山一举拿下全县文科状元。当年文科最终录取仅5人，录取比例80∶1。
人生注定自此不同！借用彭金山诗集里的话：“启明星升起来了！”
考入西北师范大学，是彭金山新生活的开始。工作5年以上，带薪读书，每月32元的工资，不但能满足生活所需，还可以有节余寄给父母。大学时代的彭金山最大的特色是“行色匆匆”，已经耽误了10年，即便将每一分钟都投入到知识的海洋里，他还是觉得不够。
在大学，发表过不少作品的彭金山在同学中小有名气，于是他挑头成立了百花诗社（1980年更名为西北师范大学青年诗歌学会，1996年10月，改名为西北师范大学文学联合会），并创办诗刊《我们》。
大学毕业后，彭金山被分配到庆阳师专，从教12年，其间创办学报，并当选西峰市人大代表。1994年调回西北师范大学任教至今。从教27年，彭金山先后获省级优秀教学成果奖、教育厅奖、甘肃省高校教书育人奖、全国师德先进个人及甘肃省第二届德艺双馨文艺家称号。
从1973年开始，彭金山不断发表作品，截至目前，已发表作品400余篇（首），评论百万余字。
最美好的青春年华，彭金山个人的命运在中国社会历史的大潮中起起伏伏，忆及当年，儒雅的彭老师感慨：“文化大革命耽误了一代人的青春和前途，但苦难的生活也磨练了我们的意志。任何时候，信念不倒，我坚信‘天生我材必有用’。”
