河海大学是一所拥有94年办学历史，以水利为特色，工科为主，多学科协调发展的教育部直属全国重点大学，是国家“211工程”重点建设和国家重点支持开展“国家级优势学科创新平台”建设，以及设有研究生院的学校之一。
　　河海大学校本部位于南京市鼓楼区，并在常州市新北区、南京市江宁区设有校区，总占地面积2301.96亩。
　　河海大学下设水文水资源学院、水利水电工程学院、交通学院、海洋学院、土木工程学院、环境科学与工程学院、电气工程学院、机电工程学院、计算机及信息工程学院、商学院、公共管理学院、外国语学院、理学院、农业工程学院、材料科学与工程学院、法学院、体育系等专业院系。拥有1个一级学科国家重点学科（水利工程），7个二级学科国家重点学科，9个省级重点学科；10个国家级以及省部级重点实验室，7个国家级以及省部级工程研究中心；7个博士后流动站；38个博士点，124个硕士点，18个工程硕士专业学位领域及工商管理硕士（MBA）专业学位授权点，24个高等学校教师在职攻读硕士学位专业，49个本科专业。其中水利工程、土木工程两学科综合实力处于全国领先位置，尤其是水利工程学科总体实力最强，支撑及相关学科门类较多，水利及支撑学科人才梯队的综合实力处于国内一流地位。目前，各类学历教育在校学生36823名，其中研究生9978名，本科生18574名。
　　河海大学现有教职工3200名，其中中国工程院院士1名，长江学者4名；具有高级职称的教师923名；博士生导师239名，有12名院士受聘担任学校的教授、博士生导师。
