长安大学直属国家教育部，是教育部和交通运输部共建的国家 “211 工程 ” 重点建设大学， 2000 年由始建于二十世纪 50 年代初的原西安公路交通大学、西安工程学院、西北建筑工程学院合并组建而成。学校座落于历史文化名城西安，现有 2 个主要教学区、 1 个实习基地，占地面积 2980 亩。半个多世纪以来，长安大学逐步发展成为以工为主，理工结合，兼有经济、管理、人文多种学科，以培养公路交通、国土资源与环境、建筑工程等专业人才为办学特色，在国内外有一定影响的高等学府，为国家培养各类毕业生 13 万余人。
学校设有 20 个教学院（部），有 5 个国家级重点学科， 26 个部省级重点学科， 6 个博士后科研流动站， 5 个一级学科博士点， 41 个二级学科博士点， 11 个一级学科硕士点， 85 个二级学科硕士点， 83 个本科专业及专业方向， 11 个工程硕士招生领域， 15 个高等学校教师在职攻读硕士学位专业， 1 个公共管理硕士学位专业，是国家大学生文化素质教育基地、中国人民武装警察部队后备警官选拔培训基地。现有全日制学生 29000 余人，其中博士研究生、硕士研究生、外国留学生 6000 余人。 　 2000年4月18日，原西安公路交通大学、西安工程学院、西北建筑工程学院合并组建长安大学。
学校有 3 个教育部重点实验室， 10 个交通运输部、国土资源部、住房和城乡建设部和陕西省重点实验室， 6 个陕西省实验教学示范中心，批准立项建设教育部工程研究中心 2 个，拥有全国高校唯一的汽车综合试验场。     学校现有专任教师1608人，其中，中国工程院院士2人,"长江学者"讲座教授1人，教授257人，副教授584人，博士生导师100余人，硕士生导师500余人；有国家级、省部级有突出贡献专家7位，全国师德先进个人1位，入选教育部、交通运输部、陕西省各类人才计划的教师70余人。 　 2005年6月26日，教育部、交通部共建长安大学签字仪式在北京人民大会堂隆重举行。
学校坚持产学研相结合，近年来，共承担了包括国家“973”、“863”和国家自然科学基金等重点科研课题在内的科研项目3000余项，荣获包括国家科技进步二等奖在内的省部级以上奖励近200项；承担了包括国家教科“十五”规划课题在内的各类教育教学研究项目200余项，获得国家级教学成果奖3项，陕西省教学成果奖16项，年科研经费已逾3亿元。     学校编辑出版《中国公路学报》《交通运输工程学报》《建筑科学与工程学报》《地球科学与环境学报》《长安大学学报（自然科学版）》《长安大学学报（社会科学版）》《筑路机械与施工机械化》等8种全国性学术期刊，其中2种为国家重点建设期刊，3种Ei数据库收录期刊，4种为中文核心期刊。《中国公路学报》连续入选第三届、第四届“百种中国杰出学术期刊”，《交通运输工程学报》被Ei核心库收录。   2007年1月10日，长安大学与中国交通建设股份有限公司校企全面合作协议签字仪式在京隆重举行。
学校1956年开始招收外国留学生，先后培养美国、德国、澳大利亚、坦桑尼亚和日本等20多个国家的留学生1000余人。学校还是我国最早承担援外教育和首批招收港、澳、台学生的高校之一。近年来，学校适应高等教育国际化的发展趋势，加大对外交流与合作的力度，先后与美国、俄罗斯等国家和地区的110所高等学校及科研机构开展了交流与合作，加入了“1+2+1中美人才培养计划”；与俄罗斯国立罗斯托夫建筑大学等成立国际大学联合体；设有国家外专局长安外语培训中心。近年来，学校主办、承办了“第五届交通运输领域国际学术研讨会”、“中国西部环境问题与可持续发展国际学术研讨会”、“高校领导与战略高级国际研讨会”、“2006西安国际大地测量高端论坛”、“关学·南冥学与东亚文明国际学术研讨会”等国际学术会议。 　 近年来，学校多次主办、承办国际学术会议。

April 18, 2000, the original road Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an Institute of Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering merged to form the north-west Chang'an University.
 
 
       Ministry of Education schools have three key laboratories, 10 the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Land and Resources, Housing and Urban and Rural Construction and Key Laboratory of Shaanxi Province, Shaanxi Province 6 experimental teaching demonstration centers, the Ministry of Education approved the construction project engineering research center 2, with the National University of the car the only integrated test range.

      School started in 1956 to recruit foreign students, has training the United States, Germany, Australia, Japan, Tanzania and more than 20 countries, more than 1,000 students. School or the earliest of our foreign aid commitment to education and to recruit the first batch of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, one of the students of colleges and universities.
