东北大学是教育部直属的国家重点大学，坐落在东北最大的中心城市沈阳。学校占地总面积203万平方米,建筑面积100万平方米。
    东北大学始建于1923年4月，是一所具有爱国主义光荣传统的大学。1928年8月至1937年1月，著名爱国将领张学良将军兼任校长。“九·一八”事变后，东北大学被迫先后迁徙北平、开封、西安、四川三台等地。在此期间，广大师生积极参加爱国抗日运动，是“一二·九”运动的先锋队和主力军。1949年3 月，在东北大学工学院、理学院（部分）的基础上成立了沈阳工学院。1950年8月，定名为东北工学院。1960年被列为全国64所重点大学之一，是国务院首批批准有权授予学士、硕士和博士学位的大学。1993年3月8日，东北工学院复名为东北大学。1998年9月，东北大学由原冶金部属院校划转为教育部直属高校。学校是国家首批“211工程”和“985工程”重点建设的学校，并实现教育部、辽宁省、沈阳市重点共建。
    东北大学是一所以工为主的多科性国家重点大学。学校设有研究生院、秦皇岛分校、基础学院、文法学院、外国语学院、艺术学院、工商管理学院、理学院、资源与土木工程学院、材料与冶金学院、机械工程与自动化学院、信息科学与工程学院、软件学院、中荷生物医学与信息工程学院、体育部以及网络教育学院、继续教育学院。学校设有58个本科专业，其中，国家第一类特色专业4个，第二类特色专业1个。有171个学科有权招收和培养硕士研究生（另设MBA、MPA、工程硕士3个专业学位授权点），81个学科有权招收和培养博士研究生，有13个博士后流动站，3个一级学科国家重点学科，4个二级学科国家重点学科，共涵盖15 个二级学科，1个国家重点（培育）学科；1个国家重点实验室，4个国家工程（技术）研究中心；设有国家工科基础课程机械基础课程教学基地、国家工科基础课程电工电子教学基地、大学生文化素质教育基地、电子国家级实验教学示范中心、第一批国家大学生创新实验计划和大学英语教学改革示范点。在2245名教师中，共有教授325人，其中，中国科学院和中国工程院院士5人，教育部“长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授、讲座教授12人，国家杰出青年基金获得者13人，教育部“新世纪优秀人才支持计划”41人，国家级教学名师2人，博士导师276人；现在校博士研究生2335人，硕士研究生4911人，普通本科生 22182人。
    东北大学坚持以学科建设为中心，在保持和发扬面向基础产业的冶金、材料、矿业、机械等传统学科优势的同时，大力支持和发展计算机、自动化等高科技新兴学科，形成了工学为主，理学、哲学、法学、教育学、文学、管理学等多学科协调发展的格局。在全国学位与研究生教育发展中心首次开展的全国一级学科整体水平排名评估中，我校控制科学与工程一级学科荣登该学科榜首。
    东北大学不断强化教学、科研功能。1989年以来，东北大学共获国家级优秀教学成果奖19项，其中一等奖5项，二等奖14项。获得国家精品课程13门，国家级教学团队2个，人才培养模式创新实验区2个。2005年，东北大学以优异成绩通过了国家教育部举行的本科教学工作优秀评估。“十五”以来，学校承担各类科技项目2500多项，获国家和省部级科技成果奖励209项，其中国家级奖项21项，获得国家专利207项，被国际三大检索系统收录论文4211篇。
