河北理工大学是河北省政府重点建设的骨干大学，坐落在华北重工业基地——河北省唐山市，是一所以工为主，工、理、经、管、文、法协调发展的多科性大学。

学校百年传承，底蕴深厚。学校组建于1958年，系由唐山铁道学院部分科系的教师和翌年成建制转入的天津大学矿冶系组建而成，天津大学矿冶系前身为1895年创办的北洋西学学堂四大学门之一的矿务学学门，迄今已有114年的办学历史。曾使用唐山矿冶学院、河北矿冶学院、唐山工程技术学院、河北理工学院等校名，2004年5月经教育部批准更名为河北理工大学。著名桥梁专家茅以升先生生前曾担任名誉院长。郭沫若先生曾为学校题写校名。学校1985年开始招收硕士研究生，1998年开始与东北大学、北京科技大学、燕山大学、中科院地球物理研究所等单位联合培养博士研究生。胡锦涛、江泽民、温家宝、朱基、贾庆林、李长春等党和国家领导人以及许多驻华使节、国内外知名人士曾来校考察。
