一走进国家测绘局原副局长喻沧的家，艰苦朴素四个字立刻涌入我的脑海。喻沧的家简单又朴素，虽然现在国家更加繁荣富强，人民生活水平大大提高，但是喻沧仍然保持着我们党艰苦朴素的优良作风。喻沧家里最多的除了书还是书，活到老学到老用在喻沧身上再恰当不过了。
喻沧1982年调入国家测绘局任副局长。1983年，主持全局工作，代理党组书记；1986年离休。1949年初，喻沧大学毕业后参加中国人民解放军，不久便迎来了中华人民共和国的成立。1950年，他奉调到北京中央军委测绘局工作，1956年又随陈外欧局长转业到地方参与国家测绘总局的建立，至今已是60年整。
谈到新中国成立60年来的巨大成就时，喻沧兴奋地说：“我的革命生涯是与共和国同龄，我的测绘生涯也是与新中国的测绘事业同龄。我难忘的是1950年8月我在当时位于铁狮子胡同军委测绘局旧址绘制1950年天安门广场阅兵图时，亲眼见到前来视察工作的敬爱的朱德总司令。朱德总司令当时就站在我的桌边看我绘图，使我这个小兵受到极大鼓舞！从描绘1950年天安门广场阅兵图，到2009年在电视机前观看威武雄壮的阅兵式和游行彩车，60年来，我看到我国的科学技术不断进步，人民生活不断改善，国际威望空前提高，在解决国际事务中的作用不可或缺，并有能力抗拒当前爆发的世界经济危机。从我自己来说，60年来，党把我从一个幼稚的小知识分子培养成为一个自觉的共产党员，把我从普通一兵培养成为一个高级干部。”
对测绘事业60年的发展，喻沧感慨万千。他说：“国家测绘局在53年的发展中，前20年，取得了一定的成绩，但也走过了一条坎坷崎岖之路，连续不断的政治运动给测绘事业带来了很大的影响。国家测绘局经历了撤销——重建——降格的变化，领导干部的人事更迭也很频繁。当时我已是58岁了，而且是匆匆上马。这段时期，局里的党内外事务都是我代行第一把手的职务。第一把手的长期空缺是一种极不正常的现象。虽然我也想有一点建树并努力做了一些工作，但对事业是不可能作更长远计议的。我认为应该有一个年轻的、团结坚强的、相对稳定的班子来考虑制定一个较长远的发展规划并贯彻实施，以使测绘事业振兴和繁荣。这乃是我坚决申请离休的主要目的。我全面主持国家测绘局的工作仅两年多，这期间整党几乎占据了大半时间。在陈外欧、李廷赞、李人林、王大钧、李曦沐同志工作成果的基础上，加上应届党组成员特别是李曦沐、刘丕同志的协助，这段期间我们也作出了些微成绩。我离休后，陈俊勇、金祥文、陈邦柱、鹿心社、徐德明等同志相继担任了国家测绘局局长，他们成绩卓著，使测绘基本上实现了现代化，在信息的获取和提供方面，已由地面和航空的高度跃升至太空高度；信息的形式已由手工记录和光机模拟到数据库信息系统；地图已由纸质平面变革为多维电子数字产品和虚拟现实。测绘作业已基本上实现了3S技术及其集成，并拓宽了为经济建设和国防建设的服务，特别是为防灾救灾应急处理的服务，最大限度地为各行各业提供基础地理信息，大大地提高了中国测绘的社会地位和知名度，测绘事业出现了一派繁荣景象。”
离休后的喻沧离而不休，继续发挥余热，积极为我国测绘事业的发展继续贡献力量。从1986年底离休后，他参与主编和撰写了《地图制图参考手册》《中国地学大事典·测绘学卷》《20世纪中国学术大典·测绘学卷》《三线耕耘》《中国近现代科学技术史研究丛书·中国近现代地图学史》《当代中国的测绘事业》《中国测绘史》《国家大地图集·普通地图集》《中国地图学史》等，同时还编辑设计了《中国煤海地区投资环境地图集》《出国及涉外实用参考地图册》《中国旅游探亲地图集》等。对测绘事业的发展，喻沧充满信心。他说，新中国成立以来的60年是不平凡的60年 ，60年艰辛探索，60年波澜壮阔，走完了西方发达国家历经数百年的发展路程，从满目疮痍、积贫积弱的国家一跃成为21世纪最具活力和潜力的世界第三大经济体。我相信祖国的明天会更好，相信测绘事业的明天会更加辉煌。同时，我们也必须居安思危、增强忧患意识，戒骄戒躁、艰苦奋斗，这样才能走得更长、更远。
