国庆前夕，为在视觉上强化中央电视台直播报道国庆60周年庆典盛况，展示天安门广场、长安街沿线主要建筑分布和记者所在位置等信息，中央电视台向国家测绘局发函希望提供地理信息系统辅助。在国家测绘局地理信息与地图司、办公室的协调组织下，国家基础地理信息中心领导高度重视，有关技术人员按照央视要求进行了约两周时间的精心准备，于2009年9月28日完成了用于国庆庆典直播报道的三维地理信息辅助系统的开发和完善，并派员到央视职守，直接为央视提供现场服务。9月29日，三维地理信息辅助系统与中央电视台综合频道、新闻频道和国际频道并机直播的国庆阅兵转播节目“盛典”顺利对接，9月30日上午10点开始用于直播节目。

　　为能够真实地展示国庆直播过程中阅兵相关的详细地理环境，该辅助系统中使用了北京地区0.6米的高清晰影像，并建立了天安门核心区域中标志性建筑的三维模型，如天安门、国家博物馆、人民大会堂、毛主席纪念堂、前门箭楼、国家大剧院等。按照中央电视台的直播安排，该辅助系统对直播过程中中央电视台白天和夜晚各十几位记者，在天安门广场核心区和清华大学、五棵松等外场地的分布位置进行了详细的标注。通过系统，可以一目了然地知道这些记者之间的相对位置，同时在直播过程中当与现场报道记者连线时，能够给观众一个对记者位置及其周围环境的直观认识，更容易从空间上理解记者们所报道的关于国庆阅兵的影像拍摄内容。此外，在系统中还详细的标注了天安门广场核心区域中从宣布阅兵开始，鸣礼炮，升国旗到阅兵结束的整个阅兵路线，据此观众能够以更大的视角来了解阅兵和庆典的流程。

　　从9月30日“盛典”节目开播，到10月1日节目结束，在整个直播过程中使用该系统十几次，很好地配合了节目的播出。期间，中宣部副部长、中央电视台台长焦利看望慰问了正在央视值班的国家基础地理信息中心操作人员，表示央视作为宣传媒体应该充分利用三维地理信息系统提供的这种新技术，为观众提供更加直观的视觉效果。
