学校面向全国31个省（市、自治区）招生。目前全日制在校学生20659人（不含三本10090人），其中本科生19126人；博士、硕士研究生2166人。自建校以来，向社会输送了14万余名毕业生，历届毕业生受到社会欢迎，大多数毕业生成为单位的骨干，不少人相继走上重要技术岗位和领导岗位。“传承‘铺路石精神’，主动服务国家基础产业，强化学生工程实践能力，面向基层培养应用型人才”已成为我校主要的办学特色。

学校现为中国人民解放军空军依托培养干部基地，现有在校空军国防生410人。

学校先后与美国、英国、法国、加拿大、俄罗斯、韩国及香港等20多个国家和地区的高等院校和科研机构建立了交流与合作关系。学校具有招收和培养来华留学生及港澳台学生资格，目前在校留学生51人，近年来共派出100余名在籍学生分别去美国、英国、法国、俄罗斯和韩国等国家和地区学习。
