河南城建学院是一所以工科为主，以城建为特色，工、管、理、文、法、经等多学科协调发展的省属本科高校。其前身是创建于1983年的平顶山城市建设环境保护学校和1985年成立的武汉城建学院河南分院；1993年，武汉城建学院河南分院改建为河南城建高等专科学校；2000年4月两校合并成立新的河南城建高等专科学校；2002年3月经国家教育部批准升格为本科院校——平顶山工学院；2008年11月经国家教育部批准更名为河南城建学院。建校25年来，共为国家培养3万多名各级各类专业技术人才。
    学校坐落在中国优秀旅游城市——河南省平顶山市。这里自然风光秀美，名胜古迹众多，有着深厚的文化底蕴，不仅有原始社会新石器时代裴李岗文化、仰韶文化和龙山文化遗址，还有重峦叠嶂、山峰挺拔的石人山风景区，以及宋代大文豪苏轼父子的墓冢三苏坟、保存最完好的叶县明代县衙等。这里人杰地灵，出现过许多彪炳青史的人物，如春秋时期的叶公沈诸梁、战国时期的墨子、南宋抗金名将牛皋、清代著《歧路灯》的李绿园和倍受孙中山赞誉的民国名将樊钟秀等。
    学校占地面积1600多亩，建筑面积58万多平方米。主校区坐落在平顶山市新城区，滨临碧波荡漾的白龟湖，校园建筑楼阁林立，错落有致，环境优美宜人，2007年被命名为省级园林单位。学校面向全国29个省、直辖市、自治区招生，全日制在校生15300多人。设有土木与材料工程系、环境与市政工程系、城市规划与建筑系、建筑环境与能源系、建筑工程管理系、测绘与城市空间系、计算机科学与工程系、电气与电子工程系、交通工程系、化学与化学工程系、生物工程系、工商管理系、数理系、基础教学系、外国语、法律系、思想政治教育教学部、体育教学部和继续教育学院（五年制专科部）等17个教学单位。有36个本科专业、10个专科专业，涵盖六大学科门类，基本形成了城建类专业体系，其中，国家级教学改革试点专业3个，省级特色专业1个。图书馆藏书108万册，各类中外文文献数据库16个，全面实行开放式、自动化管理。拥有8.5万平方米的各类运动场和大学生活动中心等完善的文化体育设施。
    学校现有教职工1008人，专任教师近800人，其中教授55名、副教授239名，具有博士、硕士学位的教师411名。有省管优秀专家、省学术技术带头人、省优秀教师、省专业技术拔尖人才等43名。还聘有40余名国际国内著名学者、院士、专家等担任兼职教授或客座教授。
  　学校始终坚持以人才培养为根本，不断强化本科教学的中心地位，积极实施教学质量建设“六项工程”，取得了突出成绩。近年来，完成省级教改项目、教育教学研究成果21项，获得一等奖5项、二等奖11项。3门课程被评为省级精品课程，4门课程课件参加全国大赛获得奖项。在全国、全省教学技能竞赛中7次获得奖励，其中在2008年全国测绘学科青年教师授课竞赛中取得河南高校唯一的一等奖。9部教材被列入国家“十一五”规划教材。教学质量建设推动了学校教育教学质量的稳步提升。2008年，本科应届毕业生的研究生考取率达到15%，部分专业达到33%。在第二届中南地区高校土木工程专业“结构力学竞赛”河南赛区选拔赛中，我院竞赛总成绩在全省高校名列第一。毕业生广受用人单位欢迎，就业率稳居全省同类高校前列。我院被建设部确定为“国家建设类一级培训机构”。
    学校一贯重视科研和学科建设工作，把科研和学科建设作为提高办学层次、培育核心竞争力的关键。近年来，学校承担国家、省、市级纵向科研项目420余项，获得各级各类奖励279项；公开发表学术论文3200余篇，其中核心期刊及SCI、EI、ISTP等国际重要检索机构刊物收录1276篇；出版教材及专著625部，获得国家专利7项。现有教学、科研仪器设备近亿元，建有68个实验室（中心）、省级重点学科1个、省级实验教学示范中心1个、省级工程技术研究中心1个。
