南方冶金学院创办于1958年,原隶属中国有色金属工业总公司，现实行中央与地方共建、以江西省管理为主的管理体制。现已建成一所以工为主，多学科相结合，面向全国招生和分配的社会主义工业大学。 校本部位于京九线上的江西省赣州市。占地面积1600多亩。图书馆藏书100万册。1998年校园网开通运行并接入因特网。

　　学院已形成以研究生、本科教育为主体，高等职业教育和成人高等教育为两翼的办学格局。设有8个二级学院、2个分校（南昌分校、赣州西区分校）。学院是全国较早的硕士学位授予单位。具备工程硕士及同等学力在职申请硕士学位单位授予权。1998年教育部批准为接收华侨及港澳台学生的教学单位。现有硕士点15个，本科专业29个；省级重点学科及重点建设学科6个，省级重点实验室1个。目前学院各类在校学生超过15000人。

　　学院具有教授任职资格评聘权。拥有一批在国内有一定影响的学术学科带头人，并聘有外籍教师和知名专家、教授任教。现有教职工1000余人，其中正副教授300多人。

　　学院累计获国家级、省部级优秀教学成果奖120项。近几年，毕业生一次就业率一直保持在92%以上。四十多年来，学院为国家培养了27000多名各类专门人才。 学院具有较强的科研基础和实力，在采、选、冶、材料、机电、环保、化工、自动控制等方面形成了自己的科研特色和优势。 “九五”期间，承担国家自然科学基金项目等国家级、省级项目和横向合作开发项目300多项，一批研究成果达到国际先进或国内领先水平。

　　学院与19个国家的高校建立了校际合作关系。聘请国内外知名专家、教授来我院访问讲学，选派中青年教师、学者到国外深造或考察。

　　在新的世纪，学院正朝着全面实施“十五”规划，创建江西一流、全国有较大影响的社会主义工业大学的目标奋斗。
