第一节 地形图应用概述
   地形图作为测量工作的主要成果之一,具有丰富的信息量,不仅包含有自然地理要素,也包含有社会经济要素。因此,在经济建设、国防军事、科学研究、文化教育等领域都得到广泛的应用,已在规划设计、分析评价、预测预报、决策管理、宣传教育和国民经济各部门发挥着重要作用。
   一、在国民经济建设方面的应用
   (1)各种资源的勘测、规划、开发和利用。
   (1)各项工程建设的选址、选线、勘察、设计和施工。
   (3)国土整治规划、环境监测、预警与治理。
   (4)各级政府和管理部门将地图作为规划和管理的丁具。
   (5)城市建设、规划与管理。
   (6)交通运输的规划、设计与管理。
   (7)水利、工业、农业、林业等其他领域的应用。
   二、在国防建设方面的应用
   (1)地图是“指挥员的眼睛”,各级指挥员在组织计划和指挥作战时,都要用地图研究敌我态势、地形条件、河流与交通状况、居民情况等,确定进攻、包围、追击的路线,选掸阵地、构筑工事、部署兵力、配备火力等。
   (2)国防工程的规划、设计和施工。
   (3)利用数字地图对巡航导弹制导。
   (4)空军和海军利用地图确定航线,寻找打击日标;炮兵利用地图量算方位、距离和高差进行发射。
   三、在科学研究方面的应用
   (1)地学、生物学等学科可以通过地图分析自然要素和自然现象的分布规律、动态变化以及相互联系,从而得出科学结论和建立假说,或作出综合评价与进行预测预报。例如,我国地质学家根据地质图分析,确定石油地层,从而找到大庆油田。
   (2)地震工作者根据地质构造图、地震分布图等作出地震预报。
(3)上壤工作者根据气候图、地质图、地貌图、植被图研究土壤的形成。
   (4)地貌工作者根据降雨量图、地质图、地貌图研究冲积平原与三角洲的动态变化。
   (5)地质和地理学家利用地图开展区域调查和研究工作。
   四、在其他方面的应用。  
   (1)旅游地图和交通地图是人们旅行不可缺少的工具。
   (2)利用地图进行教学、宣传、传播信息。
   (3)利用地图进行航空、航海、宇宙导航。  
   (4)利用地图分析地方病与流行病,制订防治计划。
   地形图是各项建筑工程规划、设计、施工中的重要资料,应用地形图就是从图上获取所需数据,解决各项实际问题。所以,正确识读并借助地形图解决工程上的—些基本问题,是每个工程技术人员必备的基本技能。
   第二节 地形图的阅读
   根据地形图认识客观地理环境,叫地形图阅读或地形图判读,简称读图。读图过程就是读者通过识别地图符号,在大脑中把接受的信息和认识领域中原有空间图像相互作用,转换为对地理环境的认识。对于不同目的的地图阅读者,其阅读的内容、深度和广度会有差异。
   一、读图的内容与方法
   1.地形图的阅读内容
   地形图的阅读内容主要包括:数学要素如地图投影、比例尺、三北方向图等;图形要素,如水系、地貌、土质、植被、居民地、交通线、境界线、电力线及通信线、独立地物等的图形分布要素等;辅助要素,如图名,图例、制图的有关文字说明和坡度尺等。
   2.读图的方法
   读图的目的和要求不同,渎图方法也就不同。常用的基本方法有:一般直读法、量算解析法、对比分析法和推理判断法。
   1)一般直读法
   一般直读法即根据地形图上的地图符号,通过直接观察,了解该地区情况。例如,从地形图上可直接了解读图地区的地理位置,所属省、市、县范围的大小,区域内的主要山脉、河流、居民地、交通网以及全地区总的地势倾斜方向、最高点和最低点的位置和高程、地面高低起伏状况以及山脊、山坡、山谷等。此法是读图方法中比较容易而又是必须掌握的最基本的方法。
   2)量算解析法
   要从图上了解事物的具体数量特征,单凭—般直接观察是难以获得准确数据的,因此就需要进行图上量算。例如,读图地区的精确位置、面积大小、某点高程、某河段长度和宽度,以及某居民地至某制高点最近行进路线和距离等。有时,还需要对图形进行必要的分析研究之后,才能进行图亡量算,获得正确答案。例如,在复杂的山地地区,由某居民地至某一新发现矿区,选定一条坡度在5°以下、距离最短的线路,在此条件下,仅用一般直读法选定线路是不行的,而要在一般直读法的基础上,作出山岳一水系略图以及必要数量的地势断面图,作为解析地势起伏变化和坡度情况的参考,然后才可量算线路长度,对比各条线路的优缺点.
