不太被人知道的是，在徐志摩追求林徽因之前，他跟林长民互相引为知己，还玩过一场互通“情书”的游戏。在通信中，徐志摩扮一个有夫之妇，林长民扮一个有妇之夫，双方假设在这不自由的景况下互相爱恋。两个接受过留学教育的旧知识分子，用这种匪夷所思的方式，来描摹他们渴望自由，但又身陷囹圄的情爱世界以及政治抱负。徐志摩写过一篇浓艳的短篇小说《春痕》，其中的主人公“逸”，就是以林长民为原型的。

林徽因最终没有选择徐志摩，她和梁思成在长辈的安排下相识相爱了。梁启超对长子寄予厚望，亲自挑选了未来儿媳人选，并在林徽因丧父后视她一如亲女。两家安排只待梁思成从清华一毕业，就送他们一起去美国深造。

这对小儿女于是常在一起憧憬未来，林徽因告诉梁思成，她以后准备学习建筑。梁思成大感意外，他从未想过文弱的女孩子要学盖房子：

从林徽因写给好友费慰梅（费正清之妻）的一封信里，可以看出他们3人的亲密与默契。当时正是抗战最艰苦的时候，林徽因和梁思成蛰居李庄，生活困顿，贫病交加，金岳霖一有假期就来李庄看望他们，同他们一道过年，林徽因一边听着日本轰炸机从上空飞过，一边在信里这样写道：

思成是个慢性子，愿意一次只做一件事，最不善处理杂七杂八的家务。但杂七杂八的事却像纽约中央车站任何时候都会到达的各线火车一样冲他驶来。我也许仍是站长，但他却是车站！我也许会被碾死，他却永远不会。老金（正在这里休假）是那样一种过客，他或是来送客，或是来接人，对交通略有干扰，却总是使车站显得更有趣，使站长更高兴些。

林徽因写完信，就交给思成和老金看，问他们可有补充，于是我们看到了接下来由金岳霖写的一段：

当着站长和正在打字的车站，旅客除了眼看一列列火车通过外，竟茫然不知所云，也不知所措。我曾不知多少次经过纽约中央车站，却从未见过那站长。而在这里却实实在在既见到了车站又见到了站长。要不然我很可能把他们两个搞混。

金岳霖写完，梁思成又接过信来附言道：
